Workshop

In-Class Bookbinding and Folding

Overview

This workshop features 3 stations around the classroom, each with the supplies for a different type of book folding or binding technique. After a demonstration of each technique, students will rotate between stations, creating small booklets. The emphasis is on the process of making, and the booklets will not include design or text elements.

This workshop is scheduled early in the semester to reinforce and recontextualize the first weeks’ conversations about art vs. craft, exclusion of women, and gendered labor. Additionally it builds a familiarity with techniques that will be utilized for the final project.

Workshop

Sequential Quote Workshop

Overview

In this workshop, students will select a quote from one of our early semester readings, and then translate that quote in a visually meaningful way into a sequential format using the book structures from the Book Folding & Binding Workshop and analog/collage techniques. Students will have the whole class session to work.

This workshop is scheduled to fall in approximately week 6 of the semester, shortly after our discussions of Women’s Magazines, Publishing, and Editorial Authority.

Activity

In-Class Editorial Image Sequencing

Overview

In this exercise students will construct a narrative or message by organizing in sequence a series of instructor-provided images. Working in small groups they will consider how meaning can be conveyed or altered by sequence, and the power of editorial decision making.
This exercise is scheduled during our discussions on Women’s Magazines and Editorial Decision Making.
